Study Shows 184,000 People Die From Sugary Drinks Every Year -
If you’re one of those people who probably cannot go a day without taking a soda, and I am one of them; you better take note of this. -
A new study has noted that 184,000 people die from sugary drinks globally every year. The study, carried out by researchers at Tufts University in Boston, covered research done on dietary surveys over a period of three decades (1980-2000). It sampled over 600,000 participants in 187 countries across the globe.
Their findings indicated that in 2010 about 184,000 people died from consuming these sugary drinks. These include sugar-sweetened sodas, fruit drinks, sports and energy drinks, sweetened iced teas and sugary home-made drinks.
The breakdown, was 133,000 deaths from diabetes, 45,000 from cardiovascular disease, and 6,450 deaths from cancer- all traceable to the consumption of sugar sweetened drinks.
“Many countries in the world have a significant number of deaths occurring from a single dietary factor, sugar-sweetened beverages,” said study author Dariush Mozaffarian from Tufts University in Boston.
“There are no health benefits from sugar-sweetened beverages, and the potential impact of reducing consumption is saving tens of thousands of deaths each year,” he added.
So if you’ll not listen to your mom, listen to the scientists, at least. They often know what they’re talking about.
