Share Model Negotiation Between Artists & Telecoms Becomes A Reality

The African Music Industry is evolving and growing very fast, the music industry is one of the biggest in the world now, raking in millions of dollars in revenue from digital sales and distribution. International Record Labels and Distribution Companies are trooping into Africa, setting up offices and signing African leading acts, this is a clear evidence that the music industry is growing and seen as the future because of the creativity and hard work African Artist put in when creating a content . With the emergence of  International Record labels and Distribution companies there is hope that proper structures will be put in place to combat Copyright infringements and create a system that will enable creatives track their revenue.

The future of the Music industry is very paramount and that is why we are asking this question. Why should the Telecom Companies keep the larger share of revenue and the Artist / content providers take the tiniest share of the revenue.

It is rather very unfair for the Artist to keep the tiniest portion of the revenue after going through the process of Writing, producing, recording, mixing and mastering of the content to meet up to consumption standard while the Telecom company gets the largest portion for distributing the content.

The Nigerian copyright commission (NCC) and Nigerian Communication Commission needs to come together and setup  regulatory bodies to checkmate the activities or transactions between Artist and Telecom companies. They can also push for a renegotiation of revenue share formula.

In December 2017 some of our Artists led by Veteran rapper 'Rugged Man' approached the Senate to approve new sharing Formula (70/30). The Artist gets 70% for providing content and Telecoms gets 30% for Content Distribution. Honourable Ahmed Abu led Ad-hoc committee on operational activities of the Telecoms companies.

African Artist have the right to benefit from their contents and intellectual properties just like Artists in advance countries. In the proposed sharing formula presented by the Senate Ad-hoc committee Artists will get 70% of revenue derived from the sales and distribution of their contents and Telecommunication companies gets 30% for distributing the content.

African Music is the future and a concrete foundation has to be put in place to ensure and secure the future of the next generation of creatives.
